MarineDieselmotorer Med Backslag arbetar på ett helt annat sätt än motorer med drev. En motor med drev monterat behöver ligga på minst 3500rpm för att drevets utväxling ska fungera korrekt. Backslag däremot finns med många olika variationer av utväxlingar och motorer med backslag kan därför ligga på mycket lägre varvtal än motorer med drev. För att en motor ska kunna leverera begärt antal hästkrafter vid såpass låga varv behöver den vara hållbar, eftersom det blir väldigt höga påfrestningar på motorn i samband med många hk vid låga varvtal.

Inboard Marine Diesel engines operate under completely different duty cycle requirements than those of sterndrive marine engines. The typical sterndrive engine needs to target an operating rpm of 3500 rpm minimum to operate correctly with the available sterndrive gear ratios. On the other hand inboard marine transmission are available in a variety of gear ratios and therefore can compensate for lower engine rpms. However, the for an engine to produce the required horsepower at a lower rpm the engine must be built such that it is capable of tolerating the extreme cylinder pressures produced (read related topic "V" versus Inline Engines).
